Fr. Stephen Somerville

The very first time I heard the name of this priest was when I found out that Mel Gibson had a Canadian priest, Fr. Stephen Somerville, celebrate the Traditional Roman Catholic Latin Mass for the film crew each day for the movie, The Passion of the Christ.  After that I found out about the open letter below which I think every catholic should take very seriously because we are living through the apostasy that the Bible warns us about and the danger of being deceived by wolves in sheep's clothing.

An Open Letter to the Church Renouncing my Service on I.C.E.L.
by Father Stephen Somerville, STL.

Dear Fellow Catholics in the Roman Rite,
1.  I am a priest who for over ten years collaborated in a work that became a notable harm to the Catholic Faith. I wish now to apologize before God and the Church and to renounce decisively my personal sharing in that damaging project. I am speaking of the official work of translating the new post-Vatican II Latin liturgy into the English language, when I was a member of the Advisory Board of the International Commission on English Liturgy (I.C.E.L.).  Read the entire letter here.

On July 15, 2004, Fr. Stephen Somerville was suspended from the priesthood by Toronto's Archbishop Aloysius Cardinal Ambrozic.  There are always two sides of the story and in defense of Fr. Somerville you should read this information.

Fr. Somerville is one of many Novus Ordo Priests who returned to the Latin Tridentine Mass.  An excellent book documenting the stories of the other priests can be found  here.

I agree with Anonymous.
How often are we, the faithful, called to follow the teachings of the Pontiff, simply because it is what he teaches? Now, when it serves the purpose of the current hierarchy, it seems that it is alright not only to question, but to reject and reverse the teaching of a Pontiff and even a Vatican Council. Am I missing something or is this a double standard here?

I would suggest that the new Mass achieved exactly what it was meant to do and that was make Catholics into protestants. I can see reflected in the comments made by several anonymous persons that the Mas is about how they feel as opposed to worshipping God. They don't seem to know that a Pope is the steward of the King and cannot "change" anything. I say the above under my own name. Veronica Jensen

The purpose of the Mass is the worship of God. The Pope is the steward of the King and can only receive, obey and pass on the traditions of the church. The new Mass achieved the end to which it was designed and that was to make Catholics into protestants.

I knew this priest. I was an alter boy when he was our pastor. He is one of the many reasons I no longer follow religion.

I can understand that because my Mom took us out of the Catholic Church after we were deceived into thinking the Latin Tridentine Mass was replaced by the New Mass (Novus Ordo). It is a miracle that I came back to the faith by the grace of God. I think it was because I still believed in God but didn't know what to do and so I prayed for help. I did receive the help I needed when I found out about Archbishop Lefebvre and the SSPX. I hope you will read this and get on your knees as I did and pray to God for help and that He will lead you to those who are doing His will. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the Life.

I knew him when we promoted the Two Hearts Novena at the then Blessed Stein Parish in Toronto. He is now in a very critical ondition at the Sunnybrook Hospital Palliative Unit where I used to work. He suffered double strokes last week. Please pray for his healing.

I had the privilege of meeting Fr. Somerville many years ago at a HLI Conference in Toronto. Father asked if anyone gathered there for the Mass could join in singing Gregorian music at the Mass. I volunteered, and now years later (2018) I am blessed to regularly attend Latin Mass here in Australia. There is a great growth in Latin Mass around the world. Thanks be to God. Lord have mercy on Father Somerville.
